"No regrets"

I can't say enough positive things about my experience with Code Institute.

I took a 6 month break from my current work and started with a keen interest but no experience in programming.

The course material was instructive and engaging & I was able to... Read More

At the start I was concerned about the online support and would have opted for the Classroom option if it had been convenient. However the combined support from CI staff, mentors and the fantastic on-line support & peer-to-peer networking via the Slack channel was encouraging, comforting and a real life-saver.

I completed the course in approximately 8 months with the constant feeling of being an imposter fading towards the final projects.

I passed with flying colors and have not looked back since. I have been working on some freelance projects and successfully incorporating the programming into my existing work interests - so I have not had much exposure to CI's Job Support (hence 3 starts). Although, if the same rigor and and dedication to student progression is applied I've no doubt it is excellent.

I'd highly recommend Code Institute to anyone considering a Bootcamp. Dependable, highly skilled and dedicated folks. Thanks!

"Online bootcamp is not worth the $"

This was one of few courses offered online at the time that I joined (plenty of quality full-time bootcamps around, but quitting my job for 3 months on top of paying $10,000 was not an option).
First I phoned to enquire more about the course structure,... Read More

Regarding our switch to a more video-focused Learning Management System (LMS). At the beginning of last year, to ensure our course remains up to date with current learning trends, we invested heavily in our content and how it was presented. Our new Learning Management System is world-class and was developed by Harvard and MIT. Research highlights that video has a transformative way on how people learn. We incorporated video into our learning platform as it enables students to digest lecture content at their own pace and explore content more deeply when they need to. Our course is designed for people with no prior coding experience, so it is natural that students will need to dedicate more time to some elements of the course.

Our new LMS was available to existing students on the old LMS, in some cases, mid-stream. However, we let all students know that both the old and new versions were still available to existing students. We also supplied information on how you could transfer from the old LMS to the new LMS at any point in the course.
Regarding your second point, mentor support is always focused on structured sessions. This is so that students can get the most from their mentor relationships and to help them build their portfolios and navigate their career goals. When a mentor decides to move job, as can, unfortunately, happen in every industry, we ensure that a new mentor is made available. We also offer tutor support, which is available to students from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday. The tutor system is in place to deal with any technical questions that a student may have. We are very proud of our slack channel too. The intended purpose of this was to build a community where our students, tutors and mentors can communicate with each other. It was also created as an extra support channel. It is also important to mention that the Slack channel was also designed so that students can advise and support each other - as they would in any other learning experience.

It’s true that we place emphasis on our credit-rating from Edinburgh Napier University. Being one of the only university credit-rated bootcamps in the world is a massive achievement for us as it allows our students to fast track their careers. Employers recognise our diploma as it ensures that our graduates have learned the most relevant technologies to become job-ready software developers. The course carries credit and can be used in the application process for universities, but it’s up to their admissions team to decide on a case-by-case basis. Our programme is credit-rated by Edinburgh Napier University (80 credits on the SCQF, which is the equivalent to 40 ECTS that can be used around Europe), it is approved by the Higher Education Authority in Sweden, the Ministry of Education in Ontario, the IMDA in Singapore, and the Higher Education Authority in Ireland. It also carries twelve credits in Lynn University, Florida, and Ohio Christian University. Our programme teaches skills and languages in a different way to universities, with a strong emphasis on practice over theory. We meet with our Industry Advisory Council every six months to review our content to ensure that it is completely relevant to tech industry trends. In this regard, we update our programme regularly to ensure that our students learn the software development skills that they need to achieve and excel in their job.

We focus on teaching students the skills and tech stack to build portfolio projects that will help you land a job. We focus on the skills and technologies that are in demand from employers. Learning to code can and will always be supplemented with the reading of documentation and resources online. This mirrors real-world software development. Anything you experience on this course is generally what you experience in the tech industry.

If you are experiencing difficulties, of any nature, on our programme, please get in touch with studentcare@codeinstitute.net, and let us know how we can help.
Kind Regards,

Code Institute Team.

"Good! But not ideal for me"

Pros:

Learning from home

Having a tutor for more difficult subjects and areas
Cheaper then uni

Tiff was really good and got things sorted as best as possible and rather quickly and handled everything professionally and was a credit to the code institute.... Read More

My new tutor was much better then the last one, (old tutor would drop appointments)

Cons:

Let downs by tutors for silly reasons on multiple occasions

Learning materials changed half way through and new material on subjects I had already covered I would have liked to have gone over again as it was abit better but had less time to do so because my time wasn’t extended so that I could cover this extra content and felt I was getting less for my money than perhaps someone else who joined 6months later.

Tutors and some admin on slack were cocky about advice and made me personally feel be-littled because I didn’t know certain things that was obvious to them.
I was also tagged in a conversation and then told that my advice was wrong but in such a way that I was purposefully made embarrassing, the information I gave was to help a fellow learner and I told them how I did that particular part and that it not necessarily correct, but that was my understanding of the subject.

Tutors weren’t always available when planned as they had to go into class, to teach, further placing my current question or issue on the back burner till I could book them in again the next week.

Regarding the change in course materials. Last year, to ensure our course remains at its best, we invested hugely into improving our course and how it was presented. For some students, this meant that the new version was available mid-stream. We’re sorry you felt you didn’t have enough time, but we did let students know that both versions of the course were available to existing students.

It’s awful that you felt belittled while on Slack. Regarding the post that you were tagged in, could you please contact studentcare@codeinstitute.net in confidence with a link and we will investigate the thread?

We see that you gave us one star for job support. We build new relationships with companies around the world every day. Please get in touch with us as there is support available and we want to help.

Kind Regards.

"Up to date tech and great teachers and TA's, Code Institute catapulted my career"

The price is affordable, considering you will up-skill or outright change your career to a higher paying salary position after you are done. You will get back your investment soon enough. It also helps that Code Institute holds a "careers week", where you will have a CV workshop, attend mini-seminars with recruitment proffessionals and get leads on positions that would require what you learned in class.

There is also the possibility to take the course online, with support from 24/7 mentor staff and a network of fellow students who you can lean on and learn from (and with). With a well structured Slack chatroom, you will always have someone to support and ask questions to.

I would wholeheartedly reccommend it as a bootcamp to change your career for the better. I'm way happier now than I was a year and a half ago before I started this journey. I earn a much better salary and my social life has improved as well owed to my new and very comfortable 9-5 Mo-Fri schedule.

"Could be more up to date"

Official Response from Code Institute

Thanks for your review. We are sorry to hear that you’re not completely satisfied with the course.

The reason we opted to use Cloud 9 is because, from an educational viewpoint, it is what we consider most fit for purpose. Because it’s cloud-based, students... Read More

Bootstrap 3 remains widely used within the industry. However, we put an emphasis on teaching students the core concepts that govern the Bootstrap framework and focus on showing students how to use the official documentation. Our approach is version-agnostic because we are more than aware of the pace of change in software versioning.

We are disappointed to hear that you were unhappy with your first mentor. We hope you have a better relationship with your new one. Towards the end of 2017, we introduced Tutor Support as an extra resource for our students. You can contact Tutor Support under the “Tutor” tab on the LMS, Monday-Friday, 9:00-17:00. Otherwise, our Student Care (details below) team are here to help with any issues which cannot be resolved by tutoring or mentoring.

To keep our content interesting, we have a diverse mix of projects ranging from online resumes to word searches to ecommerce sites. We find that games are excellent for teaching logic.

Regarding how community-driven the course is, we encourage our students to use slack. This allows students to interact with peers and solve problems collaboratively. Code Institute has a very vibrant Slack community made up of students, graduates and tutors. This is a fantastic peer-to-peer learning environment. We encourage students to use real-life cases when creating their projects as this will be advantageous to the student when communicating the reasons for using specific languages in the creation of their project, when interviewing for tech roles.

Once again, we are sorry to hear that you are not completely happy. We wish you every success in the rest of the course.

If you would like to talk about your feedback in more detail, then please do not hesitate to contact our student support team. Student Care can be contacted via studentcare@codeinstiute.net or directly on +35315394937.
