Learning a new skill, especially a technical one, can be challenging. However, I think the Dojo puts together a great mix that enables a fantastic environment for learning. It has all the necessary ingredients that make for a wholesome learning experience. First, the curriculum is set up in a way that students at any level can go at their own (but definitely accelerated) pace and come away learning something. After learning more conceptual pieces, there is immediate application through assignments, tests and a couple of projects. Second, there are amazing technical talks which give you a chance to do a little networking, but most importantly, get a great sense of what the silicon valley dev culture is like. Third, the community. Ah, the community. Working alongside 20 or so fabulous, driven, hardworking people for up to 10hours a day for 9 weeks brings people together in that "we're family now!" type of way.

Since I was a part of the first bootcamp, I've seen the Dojo go through many other iterations and have witnessed first hand howquickly it improves and responds to the needs and demands of the students. That's a great thing to be a part of.

As for job preparation.. I think that the Dojo gears itself more towards instilling a sense of community and teaching people the fundamentals rather than focusing so much on helping students get jobs. That is changing of course- they have made strides in terms of the recruiters network and encouraging students to go out and do networking.

All in all, well worth my time and money. A++, would do again.

I'm not a fanboy by any means, but I can honestly say that Coding Dojo was the best educational move of my life.

I'll get to the punch line that everyone wants to know: Yes, within one month I landed a sweet job in Pittsburgh making (literally) twice... Read More

Upside: I disagree with the previous post about focusing on a certain tech stack. I think that is one of the best aspects of the course. Most bootcamps are Rails shops. Admittedly, students come out of there as really good rails developers. The problem though is A) that limits your job searching largely to Silicone Valley. Very few Rails jobs exist outside of there. B) When Rails isnt the hot topic anymore what will you do? I agree with the Dojo's philosophy that, as developers, our greatest asset is our flexibility. However, if you have your heart set on Rails dev, the Dojo is a great place too. You'll developer really good fundamentals and have a broader understanding of web development.

The course is self paced. Granted, most students stayed at about the same level. They are constantly improving and working on the curriculum. Which implies that yes, there are rough areas. They know that and they work on it. I saw myself how many hours the staff devotes to this. They dont put in your 9-5 work load. They are there early and they all leave really late.

The instructors (currently) are previous students who had an exceptional knack at coding and mastered all the material. They assistant teach one class and then teach the next one. Dont be fooled though, Michael (the founder) keeps them busy. They are still studying the more advanced stuff that he gives them as well as working on various projects. Dont underestimate them.

Downsides: It is a new program so their "recruiter network" is relatively small. But you need to understand that it is not on them to get you a job. At the time of writing this, I have been out for about a month and 60% of my class has a job. 80% of the previous class has a job. It takes about three months to find something that fits. This isnt a magic bullet so dont go in with that expectation.

Lastly, they will not spoon feed you. You get into it ONLY what you put into it. I spent 12 - 16 hours a day, six days a week (and 8 hours on Sunday) working. I loved it. I rocked it.

And I got a kick ass job.

Trust me, this course is the best bang for your buck out there.

However, this is not for everyone - a number of students fell behind during the course and could not keep up. It can get a little frustrating sometimes, but if you work hard and keep at it, you can learn enough to hit the ground running at a job. The instructor has good experience training software developers prior to setting up the bootcamp, so I thought the teaching was decent. However, expect a lot of independent learning and effort - This is not a walk in the park.

Job support was not the best - but I found something through my own networking and got my foot in the door. Hope this helps.
