When you learn with F&C you know you'll have to explain something you've just learnt to whoever's sitting next to you, and she'll have to explain something she's just learnt to you. So you really learn it - not just so you can understand it, but so you can explain it too. This model helps you get a deeper understanding of what you're learning, sure, but it also gives you a motivation that far exceeds purely self-driven studying. The sense of community and collaboration that springs up even after the first week means that you're all working together, towards a common goal - there's not a single person here who wouldn't set their own project aside to make sure their coursemate isn't struggling.

They need their graduates to be quality developers to keep going. It also means that they have no reason to take on unsuitable applicants simply because they're willing to pay - the end result is a group of extremely passionate and motivated people. The atmosphere is great. There is a lot of peer learning with everyone helping and supporting each other to make fast progress.

The core course is 8 weeks, which is already very good. But an important component is in the weeks that follow, where graduates are invited to work on a number of (typically) week-long MVP projects for real clients. This allows us to bridge that gap between doing a course and being a professional work-ready developer.

The group format and the project-based learning is awesome. Collaborating in a small group to achieve a goal is such an engrossing and brilliant environment to learn software development.

When I left Founders and Coders, I was given a huge breadth of knowledge, but more importantly I had the tools to hand that meant I could learn anything: I knew where to start, I knew how to approach the problem, I knew where to look for answers. Despite all the work and learning, I've made amazing friends there too.

Beyond the end of the course, Founders and Coders offers support in both finding work and in continuing to learn. They set out to help people learn as much as possible by setting up a space in which people can earn enough to live but most importantly push one-another to improve. That is what makes Founders and Coders stand out to me. They didn't just offering some free classes but a comprehensive educational environment and the opportunity to join a community of highly motivated and social autodidacts.

I came away from the course with a highly applicable set of skills. Straight away, I was able to start well-paid work as a developer, which is something I continue to do.

For eight weeks I worked incredibly hard, 80h a week. I learnt so much during this time and enjoyed it so much. The course gave me a highly applicable and practical skill set. At the end of the course Dan, who runs Founders & Coders, found a real project for me to work on. Four months later, I am a full-stack web developer, working on real projects, mentoring and running external workshops. I am currently working for a client, using service orientated architecture, and a host of advanced technologies.

I cannot advice this course more, for the teaching and experience it gives you, for the heart of the organisation, for the the network and the quality of the teachers and mentors - which includes some of the best coders in London.
