I am so grateful to the entire HackerYou team for giving me the tools to begin a new career, but also it's not an exaggeration to say this experience has made me a braver, more relentless pursuer of all challenges. I'm so insanely glad I made the choice to come to HackerYou, as I researched various options fairly thoroughly before attending their Web Development Immersive bootcamp program in early 2017. As someone who really dislikes rote-based academic environments... Read More I absolutely loved the learning environment there. The instructors were deeply supportive, encouraged questions, and were very involved and accessible throughout our learning process. We engaged in more than just projects, from stand-ups to presentations, which was a really good way to prep us for the work force. The CEO Heather is also extremely inspiring--she provides a lot of constructive, honest and supportive feedback throughout the camp as well the job hunting phase that comes at the end. Quite a life-changing experience for me, since it gave me direction and the opportunity to make new connections and land a job that I actually enjoy to kickstart a new career. I have no regrets (except on the time I spent hesitating to do it!), and I find that the return on investment was more than just monetary.

I started my HackerYou journey by taking a part-time Intro to HTML & CSS evening course that made me fall in love with front-end web development. Soon after that I dropped my career in marketing and jumped feet first into the first front-end development Bootcamp at HackerYou in January of 2014. Since that time I've also taken HackerYou's Design course and Full Stack Course. I've also mentored for 5 other part-time classes at HackerYou and have seen the HackerYou community flourish over the years into what it is today. At HackerYou I had excellent teachers, experts in their domain for each of the courses I took there. My bootcamp instructor Wes Bos is one of the leading coding instructors anywhere on the planet. He's still at HackerYou teaching JS and WordPress classes. I studied design with the amazing design team behind Studio Function and Learned React from an amazing app developer and teacher, Ryan Brunner. My learning experiences at HY were first and foremost shaped by these brilliant teachers. Then I went on to mentor for other wonderful HY instructors like Ryan Christiani who has knowledge and patience in equal and huge amounts, Ann Thomas and Drew Minns, both passionate and joyous about code and very skilled.

The mentors at HackerYou are the other core part of the support team behind you when you take a class or a bootcamp. Mentors at HackerYou are always dedicated and compassionate, often past graduates who understand well what students are going through.

Then there was the unparalleled support of Heather Payne who has been my mentor and greatest cheerleader since day one as I navigated the stormy waters of freelancing and building my own business over the past three years. Nobody fights as hard as Heather to ensure HackerYou grads' success in the industry upon graduation and I wouldn't have had the courage to get as far as I have as an entrepreneur without Heather's support. Three years since graduation, I still feel I can count on her for support.

Lastly, and most importantly, HackerYou is made up of the great people who have taken the classes and bootcamps. HackerYou alumni and the HackerYou space are like a home away from home for me. I am in contact with HY students via slack every day. They are my life line when it comes to any coding or business challenge I encounter. I also see them often when I visit HackerYou for events and workshops, or when I hang out at the Alumni Lounge. Nothing beats sitting down with a fellow grad and chatting about anything and everything. This community is HY's greatest asset and worth almost as much as the knowledge you gain from the bootcamp and classes.

HackerYou gave me the skills to start my own business as a developer. I have made my living independently based on my skills acquired at the bootcamp and part-time classes for the past three years. The HY bootcamp was the best education investment of my life.

I really enjoyed taking the part-time web development course at HackerYou. I didn't think it was possible to learn so much within 12 weeks but Tiff managed to both thorough and extensive in teaching the material. I feel like I went from knowing nothing... Read More about web development to being able to build a fully responsive website that incorporates JavaScript in a very quick time -- much quicker than I would have been able to manage being self taught. I really quite liked the course environment and the people I met and am excited to keep learning with the Part-time Javascript course!

I previously completed the part-time Intro to Web Development and Advanced Web Development course at HackerYou, and more recently the JS & jQuery course as well, and I can honestly say without a shadow of a doubt that HackerYou provides the best student... Read More experience possible. It’s true that the instructors/mentors are highly knowledgeable and patient, but in addition to that, the style of learning is top-notch as well. Instead of just passively listening in class, you get to put it into practice and apply it right away, which is hugely beneficial. Moreover, the HackerYou community is so incredibly supportive that when you need help, total strangers you've never met before in the HackerYou community are willing (and happy to) help without hesitation! I'm so glad that I studied at HackerYou and I’m sure that my classmates share the same feeling. Armed with these new skills, I’ve been able to pass the internal test at my existing company and am now a Web Dev there!

Hackeryou is so far the most supportive educational institute I've ever attend (I got my master's degree here). They did a great job to build this community that's... Read More inclusive for everybody, tried hard avoiding left out anyone. I really appreciate their effort in it, and I know that this doesn't happen everywhere. During the job searching process, Heather is very good at making it very clear when the offer is not good enough, while giving me a gentle push towards what I really want.
I am very happy about my decision of joining Hackeryou on my way of switching to tech industry. This is 100% a good investment.

Read More so the 9-week intensive program will give you the HTML/CSS/JavaScript fundamentals to apply to front end developer roles and get hired. What sets HackerYou apart is the incredibly helpful family of instructors/past alums that are there with you every step of the learning process and well into your job hunt/career as well. Even after graduation, there is always help available on Slack if you ever run into a coding challenge that stumps you. Also, regular meetings back at HackerYou ensure that your job hunt is successful and past alums/current classmates are always willing to share networking tips and job leads. Highly recommended for anyone who is looking for the smoothest transition into a new field1

I attended HackerYou’s full time immersive Front End Web Development bootcamp in April of 2017 and graduated in June 2017. This is a 10 week, Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm course, and teaches you HTML for about a week, CSS for about a week (including... Read More SASS, responsive design, flex box which I believe has been swapped out for CSS Grid), then JavaScript, jQuery, and ReactJS for the remaining ~7 weeks. The final week is spent preparing a portfolio site for your demo night and Speed-interview day (industry day).

Anyone considering a coding bootcamp should be aware that this is a full time commitment. You are expected to produce a project per week in a language you learned mere days ago. You will not have time to work evenings/weekends, and you probably won’t see your friends for 3 months. That being said, you will meet a wonderful group of fellow students, and will have the full support of staff and mentors (previous grads from the program who are paired up with a student to offer guidance). This was one of the most uplifting community of people I have ever been surrounded by. Heather Payne (CEO, founder) hand picks applicants to make sure that they’re going to be a good fit. During her initial interview, she gets a feel for your hobbies, personality, work ethic, and drive. This means that the people who attend HackerYou are all driven, fantastic humans from all ages, skill levels, and career backgrounds.

The instructors are, by far, my favourite part of this course. Each instructor is hilarious, thorough, and incredibly patient. They make the material interesting, and will go over it as many times as you need to understand. There is also in-class project work time a few times a week where the instructors and mentors walk around and help with your projects. You also get exposure to many industry practices (I had never used Slack for messaging before, but got the hang of it at HY. We also practiced Stand Up’s, which is a concept my office uses every day).

Overall, this is the perfect course to kickstart a new career. It gives you an in-depth understanding of many programming languages, but more importantly it teaches you how to learn quickly, fail quickly, and try again. Once the course is over, the cohort still meets once a week for job-hunting tips, and everyone is still expected to hand in projects until they find a job. Heather has a foolproof system for job hunting and will not quit until you’re settled in a good position for a salary you deserve. The community is definitely what sets HackerYou apart from other bootcamps in the area.

Personally, when I finished the bootcamp, I had 4 job interviews and was hired as a Junior Dev within a month. My salary is double what it was at my previous job, and I’m still learning new things everyday and am on a great team.

Read More HackerYou is more than the education you get here, is about the networking and the amazing collaborative environment that they have accomplished. I just started the winter Bootcamp (yes, is my third time coming back). In only three weeks, it has already exceeded my expectations. I'm sure that I will keep on coming back, even if it's not for a course, I will volunteer as a mentor for anything I can.
