Data Engineering Bootcamp

Cost: £6,450
Duration: 13 weeks
Locations: Online, Manchester, Leeds
In-person Available Online
Course Description:

This 13 week bootcamp focuses specifically on “the back end” of software. Here is a breakdown of the course:

Week 1: Introduction Week
We’ll use the first week to introduce Python, get used to understanding its syntax, and establish good working practices. As well as Python-specific code, we’ll start discussing universal concepts like algorithms, problem-solving and regular expressions.
Weeks 2-4: Fundamentals
You’ll gain a rigorous understanding of the core concepts and best practices of Python programming. You’ll cover test-driven development, programming paradigms like functional and object-oriented programming and how to write succinct Pythonic code.
Week 5: Data Fundamentals
This is where we introduce the basics of how data is stored, analysed and manipulated. A key element is Structured Query Language which is the near-universal standard for interacting with relational databases.
Week 6: Back End Fundamentals
Data Engineering is an inherently back-end discipline and it’s important to know the principles and practice of how to create servers and APIs and how they interact with data sources.
Weeks 7-8: Cloud Engineering and DevOps
We will explore how to deploy data applications in the market-leading cloud stack, AWS. Additionally, we’ll go into the key skills of DevOps - infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and continuous integration/deployment (CI/CD).
Weeks 9-10: Data Engineering Techniques
Using the fundamentals you have learned about Python programming, data and cloud engineering, you will learn about the standard skills of ETL, Orchestration, modelling for data analytics and Business Intelligence.
Weeks 11-13: Project Phase
You’ll work in teams of 4-6 to develop a realistic data application. During the first week, you will learn best practices for working in technology teams, such as utilising Kanban, being introduced to Agile methodologies, writing user stories, conducting effective stand-up meetings, and collaborating on Git.

Software Development Bootcamp

Cost: £6,450
Duration: 13 weeks
Locations: Online, Manchester, Leeds
In-person Available Online
Course Description:

Across 13 weeks we cover a mixture of back-end and front-end with a focus on building web applications. Here is a breakdown of the course:

Week 1: Introduction Week
We'll begin by helping you build your confidence with JavaScript, laying the
foundations for you to be able to handle data and create interactivity on websites and apps. We'll also provide you with resources to help you build your HTML and CSS skills.
Weeks 2-4: Fundamentals
First things first. We’ll give you a solid understanding of the fundamentals and best practices of programming. We'll cover test-driven development, pair programming, object-oriented programming and a range of other core tools and workplace practices through the medium of JavaScript.
Weeks 5-7: Back End
JavaScript is the only language that can be run both on the front and back end. Once you’ve mastered the fundamentals of coding in JavaScript, we show you how we can use use Node.js to run code for the back end, and focus on ways of dealing with asynchronous programming. We'll look at APIs and databases, and cover Express and SQL. We’ll also work with some pretty cool third-party data sets and APIs, and help you deploy applications to the cloud!
Weeks 8-10: Front End
It's front end next - you'll learn all about the DOM (Document Object Model) and how to make accessible websites with semantic HTML and responsive CSS, and we'll introduce you to UX. React is the most in-demand front-end framework. We'll teach you the latest concepts and some key peripheral technologies so you can create entire complex front-ends for your websites.
Weeks 11-13: Project Phase
There's no better way to consolidate and extend your knowledge, and prove what you can do, than to get hands on with a real, green-field team project. With previous groups exploring Virtual Reality, Machine Learning, image recognition and blockchain (to name a few!); what you create is limited by your imagination. Curious as to what our previous graduates have created?

"Northcoders is a supportive learning environment that I looked forward to everyday."

My whole experience of Northcoders was really enjoyable and I learned so much in a short space of time. The tutors were friendly and patient, so that I always felt ok asking for help. In class a lot of ideas were explained through live coding, which I... Read More

Initially I wasn't sure whether I should self-learn instead, because I had done a lot of coding before for data science. I'm now really glad I didn't do that. It would have taken a lot longer to make the career change and I wouldn't have had the experience of pair coding, support, and friendship that I got in NC.

JOB SUPPORT
For me personally the hiring process went very well; NorthCoders set me up with several interviews resulting in me accepting an offer of employment around a month after graduating. They also provide some assistance with CV writing / interview technique etc. In my opinion one part of the process that could be improved is communicating feedback from hiring partners. I do also know I have been fortunate throughout the hiring process in finding work relatively quickly; the number of jobs on the board would ideally be higher considering the amount of graduates.

Overall I would wholeheartedly recommend NorthCoders to those looking to get into software development. It provided everything I had hoped for and I had an excellent time whilst studying there too!
