Origin Code Academy - CLOSED

I was researching bootcamps and came to this one. Researched some more and found out that this school is not approved by the Bureau for Private and Postsecondary Education (BPPE.ca.gov).

They were also cited and fined... Read More $100,000! CEO talked about doing an appeal, but I'm not sure how that turned out.
REGARDLESS, they are still not approved by the BPPE as a licensed educational institute. BEWARE!

It's no exaggeration to say that Origin changed my life by giving me the skills and network needed to succeed as a developer.

There are too many positive aspects to Origin's program to list them all, but here's a few - the curriculum teaches what aspiring web developers need to know in 2018; the instructors and staff are all highly knowledgeable, talented, friendly, and helpful; it's a known (and respected) quantity in the San Diego tech market; and the career counselling support is second-to-none.

The last point is perhaps Origin's biggest strength. There is a dedicated career counselor and his sole job is to get you a job. You'll get loads of help with your resume, cover letters, finding jobs, making yourself stand out among applicants, etc. And when you've landed an interview, the instructors are happy to step in and help you prepare for technical questions and challenges. My experience is proof of the quality of Origin's services - it took me less than two weeks to find a very good full-time developer position after graduating the program.

If you are looking for a coding bootcamp in San Diego, I can't recommend Origin Code Academy enough. Be prepared to work really, really hard - coding is really hard and learning it is really hard. Be prepared to come in to Origin's office every day and stay all day. Be prepared to bang your head against the wall and get frustrated, and then have it all be worth it when your code finally works. Be prepared to be surrounded by awesome people who are passionate about web development and building cool stuff. If you dedicate the time and brainpower it takes to succeed at Origin, you will leave well-prepared for a career in development. Conversely, if you go in expecting an easy ticket to a high-paying career and don't put the work in, you'll probably fail and call it a scam. That's not Origin's fault - be prepared to take personal responsibility for your education and hold yourself accountable. It's called a bootcamp for a reason.

There is one unfortunate negative about Origin: the free coffee sucks. Luckily, there's two pretty good coffee shops within a block of its wonderful downtown location.

If you are serious about starting a career in development and aren't afraid to work your ass off to get it, then Origin Code Academy is the place for you.

Beware Origin has known it has been operating illegally for quite sometime now.

Origin is well connected to San Diego tech companies and they host a monthly job fair for graduates. Plus, they have a career counselor that is extremely helpful and resourceful in regards to finding a job and preparing for interviews.

The office is nice and clean, there is a fridge and microwave for food, and plates and cups as well. I would recommend talking to their Admissions manager -- Ryan Dalton and seeing if a coding boot camp would be a good fit.

About a year ago, I built my first computer and quickly realized that the only difficult part of the build was the software that went with it. I then looked for an alternative way to learn software development and found Origin.

Not only was I taught different languages and frameworks, but also how to go about researching and problem solving on my own. I'd highly recommend this program to anyone who is looking for a fresh start in an exciting career path.

I felt it was a great way to transition and learn expectations for a future career in software. My teacher, Co-Founder Cameron Wilby, was amazing. You could not ask for a better teacher, you could tell he really loved teaching the subject and was very patient. He went above and beyond what you expect from any teacher and I highly recommend signing up for one of his classes, he is extremely skilled. I felt very comfortable throughout my entire experience at Origin Code Academy. All of the staff was great! They have been in the industry for a long time, gave great advice on how to problem solve, and prepared me for my career. Let me tell you I had a long process before I took that leap of faith to quit my established career and try and become a software developer. I contacted Jeff the owner when the school was only teaching its second cohort in prospects of joining a night class, which ended up not being available due to availability. So I had to look back and see if this HUGE change of life and commitment is something I can do. Six months later after saving money and planning I quit my job and started going to school in September. I was nervous and anxious to go back to school after 10+ years out of it but I was signed up and ready to go.

What sold me about Origin was Jeff CEO went thru a similar experience I did where I finished school but had little to no help actually landing a job and feeling prepared for the real world. He tailored the curriculum to fulfill what San Diego companies need and want so it really felt like I was ready to tackle what the real world would throw at me. The course was great but more so was the atmosphere created by the staff and my fellow students. Software was something I could really get my hands dirty with and have the satisfaction at the end of the day that made me feel great and accomplished. Origin shaped my thinking and helped me understand basic and fundamental principles of software development in such a way that made it possible for me to learn more and succeed not only in a team environment but by myself.
