Job Outlook for Data Science Bootcamp Graduates in NYC

What is the job outlook for data scientists in NYC?

In recent years, the skyscraper-lined streets of New York City have been dubbed “Silicon Alley” because of the high number of tech companies emerging in the city. In fact, NYC is now the second-largest tech hub in the U.S. behind the San Francisco Bay Area.

Despite the recent pandemic-driven economic downturn, New York-based data science professionals in particular should remain optimistic. The city's economy has already shown signs of rapid recovery, and the New York Times reports that technology is one of the industries leading the way. Additionally, Digital Trends notes that “data scientist” will be the most-sought-after position within small businesses in the near future. In short, NYC's job market for data scientists and analysts who have drive, passion, and up-to-the-minute skills looks promising.

What is the average salary for data scientists in NYC?

Data from job board Indeed shows that average base salaries for data science professionals are at the high end of most national salary ranges. However, data scientists looking at jobs in New York City should be aware that the city's cost of living is 80.4% higher than the national average. Specifically, New York-based data scientists typically earn about $138,462, as opposed to a national average of $121,625, and data warehouse architects in New York earn approximately $154,973 a year, as compared to $117,943.

What companies hire data scientists in NYC?

Banking and financial services have long been a dominant factor in New York City's economy, but organizations in the healthcare, professional services, manufacturing, and education fields all contribute as well. Data science professionals are apt to find employment opportunities with some of the most important organizations in the city, which include Citi, JPMorgan Chase, and Morgan Stanley, as well as IBM, Marsh & McLennan, Estee Lauder, American Express, and many more. Smaller, well-known organizations include Etsy and BuzzFeed.

As appealing as it may be for some to work in a large corporation, other data science professionals may prefer to work in small or startup tech companies. There are plenty of opportunities at companies such as Choosy, Betterment, Pymetrics, BarkBox, and Galaxy Digital. For example, Brigit, a startup that wants to disrupt the payday loan business, employs business intelligence analysts who define, create, and iterate on dashboards that help people transform their finances. At Interactive Brokers, a longtime player in the fintech space, junior data scientists are asked to execute analytical tasks on large data sets to provide insights about the company's platforms to decision makers.

SwitchUp Rankings Methodology

SwitchUp's rankings are based on over 20,000 reviews from verified students and alumni, across over 500 bootcamps in operation. Because student and alumni feedback and ratings are indicative of bootcamp quality, rankings are ordered by review score. The order of the ranking is based on data at the time of publishing, but the ratings and review counts will change as more reviews come in.

To be considered for the 2021 rankings, bootcamps must help students land jobs in tech through excellent instructor support, curriculum, and career resources; each review left on SwitchUp evaluates the bootcamp on all of these aspects.

All bootcamps considered for the Best NYC Data Science ranking were required to meet the following criteria at the time of publication:

  • Offer an immersive or part-time Data Science program in NYC
