Courses

UX Academy

Cost: $7,749
Duration: 15 weeks
Locations: Online
Course Description:

UX Academy is an intensive online design program catered towards career-switchers looking to get their first UX/UI/product design role. You'll complete over 480 hours of coursework, develop a portfolio, and hone your skills through 1-on-1 mentorship, peer Group Critiques, and Career Services.

Designlab has just released an updated curriculum for 2022 building on all of the things that have made UX Academy so successful, including 30+ new video tutorials, 60+ new lessons, and over 50 reimagined projects to help you put theory into practice and build a unique, diversified portfolio that contains 4 stellar case-study projects.

The program is broken into 2 main phases.

Phase 1 is devoted to skills building, through a series of 40-60 hour modules that cover the UX design process (topics like User Research, Interaction Design, Prototyping & Testing, UI Design, and more). In Phase 1 you will go through lessons (readings and videos) followed by projects. In total, you'll do 30-40 short projects in the first phase of the course (each module contains many hands-on exercises to help you build skills).

Phase 2 is focused on portfolio-building, through in-depth capstone projects that you work on. You will work on 3 in-depth capstone projects in this portion of the course — end-to-end design projects that help you build on the foundation you developed in Phase 1. You’ll create portfolio deliverables, write case studies, and put it all together with your own online portfolio. We’ll also focus on getting prepared for the next steps: creating a cover letter and resume, cleaning up your online presence, and putting together an action plan for your job search.

Once this core coursework is over, we’ll begin the next stage of the journey: your job search.

We’ll pair you up with your own Career Coach, who will work with you to see where you are in the process — beginning with a skills assessment and a review of your portfolio and job search plan. After this session, your Coach will provide tailored coaching and mentorship each step of the way to help you succeed (additional curriculum to build skills, feedback on portfolios and cover letters, practice interviews and critiques, negotiation help, and more).

Being a perfectionist meant I spent much more time than what they estimated on the work. If I didn't have extra time to devote to this course, it would have been difficult to prioritize my time and finish everything well. Highly recommend!

"THE Best Bootcamp for UX Design in 2020"

Within 8 months, I made a drastic career change from working in HR to becoming a full-time UX Designer for one of Houston's top design agencies that provides branding, strategy, web, print, AI, omni-channel, AR, VR, video, motion, SEM, SEO for enterprise... Read More

Why it's effective (from my personal experience): more affordable than other UX bootcamps, responsive and helpful community specialists, fast-paced curriculum that motivates you to create your own portfolio website, required group critiques, robust slack channel, and career services. I highly recommend Alan Hurt as a mentor. He will structure the curriculum so that you are presenting your work during every mentor call, defending design decisions, and developing problem-solving and communications skills that will benefit you later during job interviews.

Also, due to the on-going COVID-19 situation, most companies that are hiring are conducting remote interviews. By going through UX Academy, I felt more adequately prepared for remote interviews, having had the experience of presenting my design work through remote group critiques and skype mentor calls for the past 7 months. So, as long as put your 100% into it and believe in your career transition - good things will definitely happen once you're a Designlab UXA alum!

Cons: the only one I can think of (which have been mentioned by others in the past) is the estimated time for completion for each lesson, assignment or project is longer than what it says.
