Read More upon web development. Initially I tried to learn online but quickly realized I need a class environment to be able to focus. At that point I decided to look into schools that teach web dev. I initially signed for a Con-Ed course at George Brown due to the cost of the course but then look into it deeper and felt that George Brown is not going to give me the skills I need to succeed and then I started looking into coding schools and found HackerYou to be the best fit. I dropped the GB course and in the last moment signed up for the P/T Intro and Advanced Web Development course at HackerYou and let me tell you I am so glad I did. Yes, it is triple the cost but believe me it is so worth it. The education you will get at HackerYou is invaluable. They will get you to where you need to be. There are no exams and tests you learn by doing projects and honestly it is the best way to learn. I am amazed at how I went from very little knowledge to building responsive multi-page websites in just 12 weeks. The mentors and instructors are very knowledgeable and helpful. If you are thinking of applying for the bootcamp this definately a course I would recommend to take before you do.

Read More hole on Reddit and combing through free tutorials, Udemy courses, and trying to see how much I could learn on my own - I felt confused about what my learning path should be. It become clear that I needed a structured learning environment with experts to guide and evaluate my progress. I found myself reviewing all the bootcamp schools in Toronto and observed many of the comments to be the same. Until I came across HackerYou! There was a sense of community, pride and confidence that stood out to me after reading what the alumni had to share! I reviewed the costs, course schedules and decided I had to apply. Before I was accepted, I met with Sarah in admissions so that she could better understand my goals and whether or not I was in the right place. It was also an opportunity to check out the facility. Sarah was great and the conversation didn't feel like a stressful interview by any means. I was accepted and the weeks that followed were challenging, exciting and a lot of fun!

My experience at HackerYou was exactly what I was hoping for - a community of people from all walks of life that wanted to learn, create, and support each other while having a good time. The intro and advanced web development course can take someone that's never opened a text editor or written a line of code to building a beautiful personalized website. I mentioned a lot of free resources and online courses you can take but trust me when I stress the importance of learning current industry standards and accessibility programming - you will find that at HackerYou. The instructor & mentors were/are amazing (Jazz, Meghan and Allison) - they truly want everyone to feel supported and invest their personal time to ensure you will be successful. I could be working on a project on a Friday or Saturday night and if I had a question or asked for a review of the code I was working on - one of them would be getting back to me!

From here, I'm looking to continue my relationship with HackerYou and enroll in the January JavaScript course! It'll take some time but eventually I hope to find myself working as a Dev with my current employer and taking on freelance projects where my time allows it.

This is a great package of courses for those who are new to coding! For some background, I have little to no prior coding experience and found these courses to be pretty fast-paced,... Read More but not unreasonable. You learn a lot in a short amount of time and should be able to create some advanced web layouts by the end. Tom is an excellent instructor and did a great job at conveying the information to students, while simultaneously fending off the constant heckling by one student.

My biggest complaint is that each course only has 1 day of office hours which is simply not enough. For the premium price we pay (and it’s increasing btw) there should be at minimum two days of office hours per course. It also takes a while to receive feedback on projects, but the feedback provided is excellent! The last issue I see is a clear lack of room in the building to accompany all the students trying to study. Basically, if you’re not in the bootcamp, you don’t have a place to study.
Overall, I enjoyed the course and learned a lot! Thank you to all the mentors and Tom for doing such an excellent job!

Read More confidence in my own skills as a developer were, by and large, low.

I made a decision to go to HackerYou after one of my friend, she had a friend who had taken the bootcamp at HackerYou in the past and she had known about the issues I was facing career-wise. She encouraged me to try the part-time and then go full-time if I liked it and I'm forever thankful to her after listening to her recommendation.

I loved everything about the bootcamp, it was such a mind-blowing experience. The instructors that I had in Ryan and Danny were some of the most awesome instructors I've had in my life. There's actually an insane difference of environment between the university environment and the environment here. My classmates were trying their best, helped each other out and I honestly felt as though there was a big sense of comraderie amongst us and all the instructors and mentors (Zoe, Adam) were doing their best to bring the best out of us.

Best of all, it reinforced what I had already knew. I was already a developer but I was in such a huge rut because I just thought I sucked. I thought that I didn't belong in the development world and whether I should have pursued something else. Interestingly, that 'something else' may turn out to be teaching or mentoring as part of my experience at HackerYou was teaching fellow classmates JavaScript and programming concepts and seeing them 'get it' was really rewarding for me.

Also, I really appreciate the efforts of Christopher, Charlotte, Brandon, Sarah and the administrative team. They definitely made sure that questions, concerns, inquiries were tended to and always hosted these little games and videos of inspirations and other miscellaneous things to raise the morale and spirit of the class (it worked).

I could honestly write a book about how amazing this place is, but I'll just say that I've said goodbye to the imposter syndrome and that no one can break my confidence as a developer now.

The curriculum of Web Development Fundamentals and Advanced Web Development was set to teach the right materials at the right time. First, I learned and mastered the basic skills of HTML and CSS. Then I learned more advanced skills of HTML and CSS. As... Read More obvious as it sounds, I think that having the right curriculum is hard to achieve. At HackerYou, the curriculum was very well structured that by the time I mastered a set of skills, I was given the next right material to learn. Every new concept was relevant to my previous lessons. During every class, I had lots of exercises that combined previously learned skills with the new ones. I also worked on three projects, which are targeted to mastering and challenging your learned skills. The instructor and mentors are very very knowledgeable and approachable. There was no wrong answer in the class, and there was no one answer to problem shooting. The instructor and mentors always acknowledged this and helped me by giving me a direction to the solution, rather than spoon-feeding me the only and one right solution. In other words, I learned to think like a web developer. My interactions with the staff members have also been very great. The staff members are insightful, friendly and supportive, making the learning environment very positive and enriching the whole experience at HackerYou. I highly recommend HackerYou!!!

The instructors for both courses are all seasoned web dev professionals so they're highly knowledgeable, helpful, and patient with those just learning to code. They're also all HackerYou alumni, which is a testament not only to the effectiveness of the courses at HackerYou but the strong sense of community that is fostered around it.

The curriculum is updated frequently to keep in line with the current practices in the industry and the course notes are detailed yet easy to understand. We learn via practical exercises so we're always practicing our coding skills. I particularly like how real examples from live websites are often used to illustrate the different techniques we're being taught in the course. It's a great way to show exactly what can be done with the knowledge we've gained.

The project-based assignments can be difficult but are designed to push the limits of what we cover in the course. By keeping us just a little out of our comfort zone, HackerYou makes sure that our skills are kept sharp and that students become comfortable with using the knowledge gained in new and innovative ways.

All in all the courses are fast-paced and there is a lot of content to cover, but HackerYou does a great job making learning to code an exciting and accessible experience. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning web development.

I took the Part Time Web-Dev Fundamentals & am currently in the Advanced portion. I'd suggest taking both of them - the Advanced portion takes everything you... Read More learn in Fundamentals so much further and gives you the solid foundation you need to confidently build a website. Prior to taking this course I had virtually no experience in web development, finishing the course, I can build professional sites that you'd actually come across online.

The instructor and mentors are wonderful, they bring their individual experiences to each class and are incredibly knowledgeable. The instructor and mentors use current and relatable examples to get content across. The content and speed of the course are excellent, and every lesson is supplemented with a ton of practical exercises, some that you do in class and others that you can do in your own time.

The projects for the courses are great opportunities to apply everything you've learned and the instructor and mentors are there to guide you and provide constructive one-on-one feedback.

My learning experience at HackerYou was a lot of fun, I love the culture and I would definitely recommend HackerYou to anyone thinking about pursuing Web Development.

I entered into the part-time Web Development course in Summer 2018 with no previous coding experience, and am amazed by the progress I’ve made in only three months. For my final project in the course, I made a multi-page website that has elements of jQuery and JavaScript.

The facilities are beautiful, the curriculum is spot-on, and my instructor Jazz and mentors, Allison and Meagan were approachable knowledgeable and made the material FUN.

All six bootcamp instructors were incredibly patient, had great senses of humor, and were so kind. They alternated between lessons so you weren't listening to the same voice all week. They also acted as inspiration because they all started their web development careers with HackerYou - and they're all so full of knowledge.

The somewhat intense application process for the bootcamp ensures the best students are selected. Sure, this means all the students are quick and dedicated learners. But it also ensures that everyone selected for the bootcamp is very friendly, inclusive, and excited about their new future. I found my peers were the ones that motivated me most of all to work as hard as I could for the nine weeks. Not because of intense competition but because everyone was making such amazing projects - the drive to do your best was contagious.

I can guarantee if you start your career transition with HackerYou, you won't regret it. As an alumni, I am keeping in touch with the HY community, just like all my bootcamp friends. I know I am always going to have this community to lean on both professionally and not!
