"Part-Time (Intro/Adv) Web Development Review"
I’m finishing up the Part-Time (Intro/Adv) Web Development course at HackerYou and would certainly recommend it to anyone who has considered diving into the web dev world!
What I can say is that the sense of community is undeniable at HackerYou. Our instructors... Read More
The classes themselves are fast paced, and certainly informative! However, I wouldn’t get overwhelmed. The class notes are extremely detailed which allow you to go back and review at anytime. The instructors/ mentors are so knowledgeable and supportive. They’ve done a fabulous job at teaching people with little to no coding experience. They’re also super accessible before/after class with any question or concerns. Seriously, I couldn’t give them enough credit if I tried!
The 3 course projects throughout the Part-time classes give you a platform to demonstrate your current skill set. Each project adds a new component that you have learned in class. This is a type of program that you will get what you put into it. In other words, be self motivated!
I plan to continue my learning and apply to the full time bootcamp. I’ve enjoyed web developing to a point where I’m fully committed to making a career change in my life. This is a leading industry in terms of culture and I’m exciting to be apart of it!

"Great experience!"
I'm just finishing up Part-Time Web Development and I have never been more excited about coding than I am now.
I was looking for a career change and I had no experience with coding prior HackerYou, but was interested in the Full-Time Bootcamp. After speaking... Read More
In terms of the material, I learned more in the first 5 classes that I thought I would learn the entire course. Some classes can be fast-paced and have a lot of information, but it's not a lecture-type lesson. You are constantly coding along with the instructor and there is always a mentor available to help. The code-alongs helped a lot when I wanted to look back on how to do certain things for my projects.
I started off with no experience at all and now I'm in the process of building my own website for my last project! It's crazy how much you can learn in such a small amount of time. The instructors/mentors are always available and willing to help. They also give constructive feedback to each student after each project so that they're able to better themselves for the next project. In addition to the course, the community is fantastic - everyone I've met at HackerYou is extremely friendly and welcoming.
Overall, I've very impressed with HackerYou and would recommend the part-time course to anyone who is curious about or wants to get into web development. I believe that I now have a strong foundation for front-end development and am excited to apply to the full-time bootcamp!

"HackerYou Front End Development Bootcamp"
I graduated from the full time front end bootcamp this June 2018 and it was honestly a life changing experience. The instructors and staff are amazing people, very warm and attentive. The course material is updated so that you are staying ahead of or... Read More
In terms of what was taught (you can see the full curiculum here) we spent a couple of weeks reaffirming previous html css knowledge, it is required that you have some previous experience with this as there is a tech test to get in. You then spend the rest of the time learning JavaScript fundamentals, some tooling, React framework and some of React Router. The course is designed to help you create a portfolio site to eventually get a job working as a developer full time. I was offered a job less than a month after graduation which is honestly amazing given that I spent months job hunting after finishing university. While I will say that some of my classmates are still looking, there are at least half of us employed and the other half are having interviews / have taken a break for the summer to pick back up come September. You will not necessarily learn EVERYTHING required to work in the real world some things will just need to be learned on the job but you get a really solid foundation to tackle most problems you will face. Prior to taking the bootcamp I took the part time fundamentals course and the part time JavaScript course (taking this one was especially helpful, although no prior knowledge of JS is required). In terms of what I knew before the fundamentals...almost nothing? Some Dreamweaver suite from high school, some C++ from 8 years ago...I do have a background in science but I think that anyone can make this change with enough effort and determination. Honestly great experience, I am going back to be a bootcamp buddy for the up-coming cohort and will probably linger around and participate for as long as they'll have me.

Structure: The course is sectioned into Fundamentals and Advanced Fundamentals. Each is four days, 10am-6pm with support and mentoring on Fridays and over the weekends. Class is short lectures that feature code-alongs mixed with short bouts of independent or team-work. It is hard to ever feel left behind as their was a very good balance of 3 instructors to about 22 students. There was always time to ask questions before or after class or in Slack or you could simply look over your digital notes which you have permanent access too. Great mentorship I met so many nice alumni!
Curriculum: the Basics of HTML/CSS all the way to Responsive Design and a short but sweet appetizer of Javascript. I had a bit of a leg up having spent the months prior self-teaching HTML and CSS but this course really can get a beginner to the level that they can publish/manage their own site.
Overall: I had a great time and learned a lot. It was a great introduction to the community of HackerYou and a nice way to see if you are the type of person that can handle an immersive course. It was only two weeks of 10-6 but you are learning something nearly every hour of each day and putting it into practise. I definitely feel more confident in my Web Development skills and feel like I accomplished something great.

"Part Time Javascript"
I am nearing the last class of the Summer 2018 Part-Time Javascript course, and have taken the Part-Time Web Development in Summer of 2017, and having taken many University and Online courses that aim to reach similar end goals with their students, Hackeryou's... Read More
The course currently in 2018 of Summer covers Javascript, ES6, jQuery, APIs, Git/Github, Firebase, React intro and a little bit of Node.js to keep you interested in further learning. The class style is a mix of simultaneous coding/lecture together, taking each portion and block of code, each concept step by step. Questions are immediately welcome at any time, which is great because it prevents the class from moving on to something more complicated when the current item isn't fully understood. We each build 3 projects and they are increasing in challenge level, with you feeling like you've accomplished a hurdle after the completion of each one.
No question feels too silly to ask in the Hackeryou classroom, and the 2-3 TAs in the class are paying attention every minute to spot if someone's raised hand goes unnoticed, or if anyone is having trouble with following along. The students I've had the pleasure of learning with are all engaging and so creative, and most of all everyone wants to be in that class, come from 9-5 jobs and continue their day absorbing new information, actively participating in class.
One thing I would love to see in the future for this class, (even though there are plenty of opportunities to work on code challenges with partners in the class, and Tiff (our instructor) always incorporate it into class) is more group work or pair programming, I found that I got to learn just as much if not more from my peers as I did from self learning/googling. Having maybe 1 group project or assignment may be really fun!
For anyone interested in a course I encourage them to take the step, you will not regret learning in a supportive environment with no ceilings set on what you can achieve. After this course, I feel more confident in building interactive web applications using APIs, and I look forward to continuing to develop my skills to become a full-fledged developer.

"Summer 2018 Part-time Javascript review"
I recently completed the Summer 2018, Part-time Javascript course at HackerYou.
At first, i found Javascript to be hard and at first it made me want to quit; but thanks to all the help from our mentors and teachers, i firmly believe( like my teacher, Tiff... Read More
I choose to go to HackerYou because i had heard/read other reviews that said HackerYou had one of the best tech bootcamps around and has a very open , welcoming environment.
The reviews i read did not exaggerate in the least. The moment I first walked into HackerYou I was greeted with an immediate 'hello, how are you?". Which i honestly find to be rare from most education institutions. On top of that, I saw people just relaxing doing work on their computers or just helping others with their work. I enjoy the community at HackerYou because everyone is so helpful and often help others with a smile on their faces. This also made it easy to have helpful conversations before or after class with mentors, teachers, managers, other rads, etc.
I found that the javascript course required a different way of thinking about how to answer problems because you do often see the immediate result after performing an action. HackerYou's learning style is a great help in learning these new skills for yourself. Although you are in a class being taught the material in a classroom for a few hours, the pace at which you acquire the knowledge is mostly dependent on the student. I find the class to be very self motivated. After class, we are given lots exercises to further study the material. Along with the teacher, there are mentors to communicate with. In case we had any questions after class, about the material or the work. I personally found all of this to be helpful, in understanding all these new concepts in Javascript.
One more thing i enjoyed about taking this program at HackerYou, is using their learning space. HackerYou has a open and friendly learning space. The kitchen and couches gives Hackeryou a very calm feel to it. There is also large window that offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area. Something that is also inviting about HackerYou is the calm music that is often playing, as well as the quiet areas if you just want to be alone to work. There are as well tables to be able to converse with your classmates about the lecture and projects.
My time at the part-time Javascript course at Hackeryou has taught me to be more litteral in my coding and to make projects that would be useful to everyone, not just one person. After HackerYou, i intend to continue to use my new skills
to continue building apps and improving on some of my old work. Not to be afraid to work on more complex projects as well.
